Intercultural hermeneutic practices. Mélanges en hommage à Alioune Sow. Yaoundé: Éditions CLE.

Contents

The mixtures we present here are dedicated to the memory of Alioune Sow, who died too soon when he still had much to give, both as an eminent researcher and as the passionate teacher and trainer he was. The contributions come from his students, now themselves teachers and researchers, and from his lifelong colleagues, both in Senegal, the country where he was born, and in Togo and, of course, Cameroon, where he worked for over twenty-six years. The themes are varied and cover different fields in which Alioune Sow has researched or taught. Thus, we have contributions to the debate on the purpose of Germanistics in Africa, a debate that Alioune Sow was one of the first to open with his thesis on Germanistics and the problem of development. Sow's second field of investigation is the postcolonial debate, in which he followed with interest the African attempt to appropriate the categories in order to configure his own approach and a perspective that would make it possible not only to take on board the complexity of Africa's political, cultural and literary relations with Germany, but also to cast a critical eye on Germany's intellectual management of its colonial past, as well as its postcolonial situation and responsibilities. The third field of contributions is made up of readings that reveal the full complexity of the African hermeneutic approach to German literature, an approach that originates in individual or collective existential and historical interrogations specific to the researchers, but is articulated around a careful and professional reading of texts by canonized or non-canonized German authors, thus fuelling an endogenous debate while revealing new strata of the work. We also classify in this category readings of African works by African Germanists, a reading that takes up categories and prisms developed from their frequentation of German literature and criticism. The fourth field of research concerns the didactics of German in the Cameroonian context. The book concludes with the text of the last research project Alioune Sow was working on when he was surprised by death.
